DIY to Try: Holiday Edition

By Kate Riley November 12, 2013

Hey all! I confess I’m in full Christmas mode this week – I love all the crafting and decorating ideas being shared around the blogosphere and on Pinterest right now, so much creativity! Whenever the catalogs start arriving in late October and early November I like to pile them up and then sit down with a cup of coffee to browse what’s on the pages. I always spy a few things I think could be recreated and a bunch of inspiring ideas jumped out at me, so I had to share!

A version of this felted wool wreath at Viva Terra could be recreated with leaves cut from inexpensive pieces of felt glued to a wire or foam wreath.

Antlers are still hot right now – here’s an idea from Horchow to create a series of them using wood plaques and decoupage medium (patterned paper or fabric). For faux antlers, look to these DIYers: Cassie used clay, Shannon used leather, wire, and a shell, Jennifer used driftwood branches, Aimee used branches and clay.

A template, a jigsaw, some plywood and paint, and you could make your own whitewashed reindeer like this one at Home Decorators to display year after year.

These snow white felt evergreens from Wisteria make a charming accent, especially the stick trunks and stump stands – recreate with two foam or cardboard cones and felt from a craft store plus trimmed twigs from the yard.

This wire ornament chandelier from Crate + Barrel reminds me of wire hanging baskets turned upside down – ad more wire with clips and ornaments strung from ribbons to get the look.

Here’s a fresh idea from Urban Outfitters – wrap a wire tree or branches with yarn in unexpected colors – so fun !

I’ve spied a few creative remakes around the blogosphere, check out Sarah Hearts metallic gold glassware inspired by West Elm’s version.

Jen’s been busy with her holiday decor inspired by catalogs, she created a gray version of Pottery Barn’s Christmas mirror and a gold version of Ballard Designs Christmas sign.

Tara from Between You and Me recreated Anthro’s fluffed wool wreath for a fraction of the cost, so pretty!

Are you inspired to recreate a holiday accent or look you’ve seen online or in the catalogs this year?

  1. Thanks so much for including my West Elm inspired glasses! I’m loving the yarn wrapped wire tree. So simple and festive!

  2. Just saw the ornament chandelier in the Crate + Barrel catelog last night and was wondering to myself how to recreate it. Thanks for the great tips!

  3. I’m tempted to make several felt trees for my kitchen table this year. I recently made one out of pine cones that is on my blog this week.
