Summer Fabrics 2014

By Kate Riley June 2, 2014

Hello ! Today I’m so excited to share with you my new fabric patterns for Summer 2014, you’ll find prints inspired by the coastline and the casual vibe of this season, and all are available in bright colors. Designing fabric patterns is a passion of mine and the ultimate DIY project from concept to completion. Thank you so much for following along on this adventure, some of you even purchasing some of my prints, I so appreciate it !

When we took a trip to Hawaii last year I was so inspired by the islands they influenced many of the designs including Balmy and Aloha and I took yards of fabrics with me to photograph them on this year’s trip to Kauai. It was fun to photograph on location! :)  I colorized some old favorites from the Winter collection too, find the new prints and older ones all in my Spoonflower shop.

This process is a labor of love for me, from the original sketch to final colorization, then comes printing, sewing and styling, I enjoy it all so much. I poured my heart and tons of hours into this recent collection, I hope you enjoy it !  View the Summer  Lookbook below or follow this link to read it on Issuu.

I set up a Kate Riley Porfolio website, the larger images from the Lookbook are all there, just visit the Fabric Designs tab, pin your favorites and spread the word!

I’m going to tackle a children’s collection next, I have a kids’ bedroom to decorate so I’m inspired by that opportunity! And of course I do so love the holidays so look for new Christmas prints and gift wraps in November just like last year. If you have any ideas for new patterns, I’d love to hear about them, perhaps I’ll design a new one inspired by YOU!

Enjoy the new collection!   .

  1. Kate, you hit it out of the park again. That lumbar pillow in Sketched Diamonds caught my eye, Starburst in all colors, Jaipur, and Under the Sea that you are modeling (looks great on you), and your cute daughter all look wonderful. Your hard work is inspiring. Good luck. Kathy

  2. Kate,
You are reading my mind!! I had just decided to redo my son’s room, he has decided he has outgrown star wars. *sniff, sad day for me* so we decided to go with a surfer/nautical theme. I bought big fat navy and white striped duvets and was looking for some Lime Green Palm Frond Fabric to use for shams. He wants Navy, White, and Lime Green. I see in your post, you have the exact fabric I was looking for!
    Hooray!!

  3. Wow! Kate, your fabrics are gorgeous! I love every one of them. How special to photograph them in Kauai. It’s inspiring watching you follow your passion and your love for design really shines through. A labor of love it is. The lookbook is beautifully done and your daughter is darling. She looks so much like you.

  4. Kate I am blown away! Wow! And you used my fav combo…pink and green! Oh to decide how to use them. You are so very talented, and I do know it took tons of work. But the result is outstanding. Congratulations on this debut.

    • Thank you everyone, so kind of you to leave such lovely encouraging comments, I so appreciate you!

  5. Bravo, Kate!! I just can’t even tell you how much I LOVE your fabrics! All those greens and blues.. My favorites are: pineapple, Sketched Diamonds, cabana stripes, matrix, and squared. I love how you stay true to your style, and I also love how you just go for it!! It’s inspiring!

  6. They’re all so lovely! I can see the makings of the color pallet for our patio :)

On the children’s designs, may I put in a request for a construction (diggers, trucks, etc.) themed fabric that doesn’t hit you over the head with its construction-ness (that’s a word, right?) My son is obsessed with trucks of all sorts and I’d like to redecorate his room now that he’s getting bigger (sniff sniff!) However, all of the trucks/construction themed fabric has been all TONKA and garish and bright. Something subtle, please? :)

  7. A beautiful collection Kate and your lookbook is just fantastic. Not sure which pattern I love most – diamonds, under the sea, floribunda… love them all!

  8. I love your fabrics. I have never purchased any fabric in my life, but I’m considering purchasing some of yours to make curtains for my newly semi-remodeled master bedroom. I can’t sew to save my life, but I’m going to try to sew or maybe go the no-sew option. When will the Jaipur be available for purchase? I love, love, love it.

    • @Ann – Jaipur is for sale now, I forgot to click that button yesterday!
@Alexia – yes definitely – sketches of excavators are already in my head!

  9. I can’t even tell you how much this Hawaii born girl loves this post. These fabrics make me so happy. Maika’i on creating such beautiful patterns! I would love to use these somewhere in my own home, you’ve got me dreaming now!

  10. The summer options for the sprig are lovely, I have been waiting to purchase since you previewed the blue and coral earlier in May. It doesn’t appear to be available for purchase yet, do you know when this will be available?

  11. Your designs are fantastic – I need to drag out my old sewing machine (or get a brand new one??) and practice making curtains for my beachy guest room (Jaipur in pale blue or Diamonds in yellow). You should be proud of yourself, these are exciting prints – just lovely. Kudos, Kate!

  12. Love these fabrics! I’ve been really uninspired by the fabrics I can buy in my area (even living in a big city like Chicago). Question, do you think any of the fabric types offered by Spoonflower would be okay for outdoor use? How do they compare to say, a fabric from a company like Sunbrella.

    • Hi Kelly! Unfortunately Spoonflower doesn’t offer outdoor fabrics yet, however, they are constantly adding new types of fabric to their growing list, perhaps “outdoor” will be an option someday! For now stick with Sunbrella type fabrics for anything in direct sun, if it’s a covered porch or patio, you can certainly use the indoor fabrics, I often do, since they’re not out in the bright sun :)

  13. Thanks Kate. That was going to be my next question. Thankfully, my outdoor space is covered so I may try doing a few in the indoor heavy weight fabric and see how they hold up. Glad to know that indoor fabrics still hold up well outside when they are out of the sun. And hopefully outdoor fabrics will eventually make the list. I’ve been disappointed by how few options are out there. The patterns never seem quite as fun for outdoor fabric as for indoor fabric.

  14. Kate your new line is to die for. So summery and relaxed. I can’t wait to see what you do with a children’s line as I am getting ready to do a big girl room for my daughter who has outgrown her nursery. Your talent has no limits! xo

  15. Kate these fabrics are fabulous!!!! absolutely gorgeous, now I have to decide which ones to purchase. You are my new favorite fabric designer, you have incredible talent.

  16. That is very kind Elysa, thank you !! And to everyone else who left such kind compliments, I so appreciate it!

  17. Thanks again for your helpful answer to my question. I ended up going with the Twirl in Monaco Blues in the heavy cotton twill. This is my first ever purchase from Spoonflower so I am excited to see what it will be like. :-)

  18. Kate, I have been away from the blog for WAY too long. I must catch up on your posts. Congrats on the wonderful Summer Fabric line. GORGEOUS!!! I’m going to look now because I have been looking for something for my bedroom for awhile now. I’m drooling over the colors and the patterns!!! :)

    • Very kind Jen thank you !
Thank you so much Kelly, I hope you enjoy that pattern, I love it and that’s one of my favorite color combos!
      Kate
