For Your Reading Enjoyment…

By Kate Riley November 2, 2011

Hello.  Did you know it’s November?  Yeah, it is.  Hard to believe, right?  Well November means it’s time to get your holiday on!  There’s a gal we all love who’s just published a Holiday Guide that I know you’ll be so excited to read. Of course you all know of the talents and charms of Ms. Emily Henderson.  THE Emily Henderson, Design Star winner and stylist extraordinaire.  She’s funny, inspiring, and oh so talented when it comes to design, so how delighted was I to be invited to be a part of her Holiday Guide?  Very!

The Holiday Guide is filled with over 200 pages of inspiration including a gorgeous Christmas spread styled by Emily and also her extensive gift guide. But that’s not all!  There are so many other original contributions from many talented bloggers (full list here).

My contribution is a perspective on classically elegant lace which often gets a bad rap as too ‘granny’. I take issue with that notion and offer a few suggestions for using lace in holiday décor, but still keeping it fresh, like the pairing of this modern Marimekko gift wrap along the back of a cabinet with classic white lace used as a decorative liner.

Ever considered using lace as a stencil?  This gift wrap was an easy DIY project, read the one step how-to in The Guide

Anytime you combine colorful lace with modern patterned paper (this aqua one from Papyrus) you add panache but also a nostalgic touch to your gift.

There’s a few more examples on the pages, be sure to take a peek at all of the inspiring tips and decorating ideas!

  1. OH MY GOODNESS!!! More great reading to do! Thanks for the heads up on Emily’s holiday issue. After I submit this comment, I’m clicking on it:)

Never Ever thought of using lace before… You’re such a smart smart girl!

Thanks for the mention of HoF! Janell really did a great job on this issue!

  2. I adored your pages in the Holiday Guide, you do gorgeous work. AND wow, thank you for sharing the Holiday issue of House of Fifty with your readers, I’m honored. :)

    Let the Holidays Begin!! Janell

  3. I LOVE lace! The lacy photos here are amazing! I kinda try to use it as much as possible without looking “granny”. Thanks for showing how beautiful it is!

  4. Such lovely ideas! I’m so excited to decorate for the holidays. I’m trying to hold off on the Christmas stuff, though. When I was little, we always did our Christmas decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving (so each holiday has it’s time in the spotlight!). I’m trying to resist but I don’t know if I can make it for another three weeks…

  5. Kate, I’ve been thinking about painting my dining room a deep peackock color…emily’s dining space is so inspiring! Any advise on what color that may be??

  6. Well, a few posts like this one and I just might get in the mood! I’m going for a “less is more” look this year, but it will still be sparkly! The photos are wonderful, can’t wait to read more.

  7. Great article on using lace for a soft holiday look! Love it over the giftwrap. :) I am totally drooling over Emily’s gift ideas…they ROCK.

  8. I totally loved the entire magazine. I started collecting my “peacock” colored ornaments as soon as Hobby Lobby put them out. It was nice to see it all pulled together. And your lace gift wrap will look perfect under the tree.

  9. I am so loving lace right now, and saw it used as a stencil on Nate Berkus and have been itching to do it ever since! Your wrapped gifts are always so beautiful. I bet your recipients have a hard time ripping them open because they are just too pretty! Can’t wait to hop over and check out the rest of the holiday guide!

    xoxo,
    Jen
