Master Bedroom Makeover

By Kate Riley May 10, 2017

Designing a space from scratch is always a challenge, if it’s for a client the final look must meet their needs and expectations and when you finish you can walk away. But when you design for yourself you have to look at it everyday and really love what you’ve created. You need to ask yourself, “What do you really want, for you?” I had to ask myself just that about my master bedroom.

You know that minute or two you have each morning between between when you’re dreaming and when you’re awake? I love that hazy zone when I’m shifting from night to day. I asked myself what I wanted to see in that dreamlike place. What do I love? Blues of course. Dark wood and white sculptural objects. Botanicals. Texture. A mix of gold and silver. A blend of traditional and modern. Things that have meaning but also feel fresh.

In the bedroom where you spend a third of your life I believe it should reflect what you really love, so that’s what I did in this One Room Challenge.

I kept the same bed frame and leather X stools that I had before, but the azure club chairs are new, love them!

A few other things I already had and decided to keep included the vintage Drexel Heritage dressers, my Target lamps, and the two jewelry boxes I’ve had for years. Just about everything else is new. You may recall this makeover started with getting rid of the carpet and installing hardwood flooring and also giving the fireplace a major makeover.

In my Week One post I declared that the color palette for this space was inspired by this art from Minted. I ordered a large framed print along with this blue botanical print and hung it above my dresser. They’re flanked by some cool gold sconces from Z Gallerie. The white planter trio and marble orchid planter are from CB2. The cool sculptural bowl that I used as a planter is from The Mine.

I loved the idea of waking up to greenery in this space. Previously there was a bulky dark wood armoire in this corner that housed dresses I never wore. I got rid of the dresses and I plan to sell the armoire. In its place I added a trio of tropical indoor plants. The tall planter and lower basket are from The Mine. The mid tier circular planter I found at Home Depot and spray painted white.

A main focal point in the space is the new light fixture. I am SO CRAZY about this Luna chandelier by Crystorama I’ve been in love with it since I saw it over a year ago. The elliptical gold and white rings make my heart swoon! When I had the chance to get my hands on it and use it in this space, I had to have it!

The random scallop/animal skin pattern in the eclipse area rug adds a subtle pattern and softness underfoot when getting out of bed. The bedding is a blend of Pine Cone Hill Euro shams, coverlet, and brushstroke pillow paired with accent pillows in my own reverie fabric.

The lamps are from Target I’ve had them for a year. On Matt’s side he has his nightstand and highboy too.

On top of the adjacent highboy I hung the DIY diptych art I created a month ago, the blues and botanical theme complement the space nicely. The horn boat bowl is there to hold keys and spare change at day’s end.

On my side I have the same nightstand and lamp but different decorations: a jewelry bowl where I keep my rings and a new candleholder. The woven window shades courtesy of The Shade Store layered with grey cotton velvet panels from HomeGoods.

A few more up close details. First, I absolutely love the randomness and amazing texture on the mirror that hangs above the gas fireplace. Do you see that sculptural driftwoodish frame? Major heart eyes!

This rectangular vase and the gold faux air plant are from Z Gallerie (sources below).

This luxe faux fur throw is from All Modern.

This concludes the tour and the One Room Challenge, it was exhausting but so worth the effort!

  1. So tranquil and restful. Dreamy colors and I love the diy art. I remember doing sun prints in school. It was so much fun. I’m impressed by all that you accomplished. I’m hoping to be ready for my reveal tomorrow :0

    • Can’t wait to see all the guest participant spaces Marcie I’ve set aside a chunk of time just to read about them all!!

  2. This space is really pretty. I love the classic elements mixed with the modern finishing touches. Beautiful job!

  3. kate, it’s gorgeous! it’s still serene and lovely, yet it has more edge and boldness. love the blues, and the bedding. my favorite area is with your DIy art over the highboy…. that scene feels very “coastal living” to me!

  4. This is so luxe and sophisticated! Such a great makeover! I’ve been a reader for a long time and can see how your style has evolved (esp. in this room). Beautiful!

  5. So in love with this!!! I have a question about the sconce. What are your feelings about a candle sconce on the wall? Any tips? I have some beautiful ones I want to hang but not sure where and I am a little intimidated having floating candles on the wall. Would love your input! Thank you!

    • Hi Amy, they are decorative for sure, I think the key is to just make sure there is adequate room for any flickering flame from candles :)

  6. Looks AMAZING! You have so many great details, and I think it matches perfectly with your vision for the space. I think the seating area with the club chairs is my favourite – but the plant trio is a close second :)

  7. This room is so beautiful and serene Kate. Love the art and sconces. It must feel wonderful to wake up in this space now!

    • It is! The first thing I see is that chandy then the plants, it’s so inspiring to wake up to things you love.

  8. Kate! You’ve done it again. I love that you used some old and new stuff. The colors are very inviting. I didn’t realize you had a fireplace too. Very jealous! Thanks for sharing!

  9. Hi Kate, the room is stunning. I love all of the blues with the soft grey and white. I would not be able to decide if I wanted to sit in one of those lovely chairs, or prop myself on the bed. I definitely would not want to leave the room. Great job!

  10. The room turned out beautiful, so many lovely elements. You definitely achieved your goal of creating a tranquil space. Absolutely adore the gold candle sconces!

  11. Love all the fresh greenery and that cozy fireplace corner! Such a calm and relaxing room!

  12. This room is sooooo inviting and is every blue lovers dream.
Stress just has to melt away when you enter that room on a chilly day with the fireplace in use.
If you can work this magic when you take a trip half way thru….. what could you do with a full six weeks???
    A whole house????:):)
    Fantastic job.

  13. Beautiful job! I love that rather than chandelier bulbs in your chandelier, you used the round bulbs that I like so much more. I think they make the look even more modern.

  14. Impressive.I like the DIY art you used to add in that room. Absolutely fantastic. You always add your signature through out all the works you have done, I love that anyway. :)

  15. Lovely transformation. I am a guest participant and I’m just getting around to looking at some of the finished rooms at the 20 designers. great job indeed! You make it look so easy.

  16. Beautiful room, you always do such a great job. Glad you kept the Drexel pieces, they are to die for, the chandelier too. Very serene room.

    • One is a banana leaf palm tree, the other is a butterfly palm and the third is a regular house plant I forget the actual name of it but they are all indoor plants which is most important :)

  17. Hi Kate,
Is the bed a king or a queen? And then, what size is the rug?

    Thanks so much

    • Hi Mary, great question. My bed is a California King which is 72″ in width x 84″ in length. It is 4 inches longer but 4 inches narrower than a king size bed. The rug is 94″ x 130″ which allows for visible border around the bed frame, 22″ on either side of the bed and about 30″ past the foot of the bed to make room for the two small stools that live there.

  18. Can you please give the info our the brass curtain hardware?
