Dining Room Changes

By Kate Riley October 17, 2016

I made some changes to the dining room this month. This space has always been a mix of formal and casual, I dress it up for holiday dinners and dress it down the rest of the year. My style leans more transitional, I always mix classic pieces with modern accents and I love to decorate with subtle patterns, neutrals and blue tones, I find the medley soothing.

I added a simple dining room bench to the sitting arrangement to squeeze in more people when necessary, I like how the bench make the space inviting. The built in cabinets are a dark stained wood, so are the parsons chair legs while the furniture and floors are a natural color, I like when wood tones are different, it feels richer and more layered.

The curtains are new, they are the mosaic panels from West Elm, doubled up on each side and sewn together. I also stitched a liner to the back so all you see is white when you’re looking at them from outside. The white beaded chandelier I installed two years ago, I love its modern shape in contrast with the more traditional furniture.

The Samode rug is from Dash & Albert, it used to sit in the living room but I’m always rotating rugs around so it lives in here now. The parsons style couture chairs are from Ballard Designs, I’ve had them for about ten years and I just swap out the pleated slipcovers every few years, this time I chose oasis velvet.

I wrote about this succulent boat a few weeks ago, it’s still thriving in this spot. I love this living centerpiece that looks great in any season, I’ll tuck some shiny bulbs inside when Christmas approaches.

I didn’t do much fall decorating this year other than filling a few vases with fall leaves and scattering a few pumpkins around the house. I’m saving my energy for the holidays which are just around the corner, yikes here they come!

  1. I love how you use prints and am always impressed with how you mix them, because this is something I agonize over regularly. Can you recommend a source that might help me?

  2. Just curious about your thoughts on rug size – do you find that for a “thinner” rug a smaller size works for the dining room? I think my wool rug (which was a steal on CraigsList) is just too small because you can’t move all the chairs without the back legs being off the rug, but maybe because the wool rug thicker than the D&A. So perhaps a steal isn’t so great if it’s not the right size… Thanks!

  3. I am very impress with your modern accent, subtle patterns, neutrals and blue tones. It’s really eye-soothing.

  4. It’s certainly possible to alter the look of a room without making the changes too drastic. By swapping out light fixtures, hanging new pictures, and swapping out the linens, it can give the room an instant update.

  5. Love the chair covers! I have a traditional table with chairs that I love but I want to make them more modern, Do you think covering the chairs will do the trick? thank you.
where did you but chair covers?
