Blu Homes Tour in Sonoma

By Kate Riley August 17, 2015

I’m a kid in a candy store when I get the chance to explore a model home. On Saturday, Blu Homes, the widely popular manufacturer of modern prefabricated homes, was offering a peek into two models they built for a client in Sonoma, and I had the chance to visit and photograph them.

pool and backyard

Blu Homes began as in innovative approach to modern design with the idea to build homes in half the time of traditional method. All Blu homes are smart featuring advanced technology, they’re energy efficient, and built with eco friendly materials.

The models have been installed in over 30 states, but demand is so high right now that Blu Homes is limiting their production to California only for the next 18 months.

I visited two homes on a shared lot, I learned this pair of homes belongs to a client who allowed the tour for a day. I imagine this is a second home since the closets were empty or perhaps the owners haven’t quite moved in yet. The decor was simple throughout.

I’m always interested in materials, thankfully Blu Homes provided them! The gorgeous flooring throughout is Plyboo prefinished bamboo in Havana.

There were two full bathrooms in the large Balance model, and one in the smaller Element model, all three showers had brick pattern Emser Lucente glass tile, this first bathroom has the Crystalline in the shower installed in a simple brick pattern, the vanity is Heartwood maple and the floor tile is Emser porcelain tile in Pietre Del Norde Vermont.

This bathroom again has Emser glass tile in Ocean Mist with white grout, the cabinet is by Heartwood in White Gloss, the countertop is Caesarstone in Quartz Pebble.

This bathroom also had the same gloss cabinet and Caesarstone countertop, the glass tile in the shower again Emser in a bold Empire Gold.

In the larger Balance home the owner chose veneer Bali Teak cabinets and Caesarstone countertops in Pure White.

I love wood cabinets with a frameless contemporary fronts like these.

The smaller Element home had white gloss kitchen cabinets and a shimmery Sandalwood glass tile backsplash by Walker Zanger.

Again Caesarstone for the win on the counters, this is the Espresso quartz surface, very attractive with the white gloss cabinets and paired with the dark bamboo floors.

The main living areas are all bright and contemporary, designed to allow plenty of light to bring the outdoors in.

Each home can be customized according to the client’s desires, I had fun thumbing through their design idea book imagining what I would choose!

The exterior siding on this pre-fab home is Atlas Metal with a 12” reveal in a bronze finish, the windows and sliding doors are Andersen.

Here is the view of the yard from the larger Balance home, the smaller Element toward the back makes a perfect granny unit.

In between the two Blu Home models the owner installed this beautiful rectangular pool, I can imagine spending many hours here on a warm summer or fall day!

  1. This concept will have to grow on me. Very soulless…like the IKEA of homes. Interesting article, though, as always.

  2. So this is going to be a strange comment but while the floating toilets look pretty, for some reason they make me super nervous. I’m sure that they’re more than bolted into the walls but I can picture one collapsing as a larger guest sat down. Anyone have one in their home and can attest to their sturdiness?

  3. I have to agree with D. Gibbs. Very cold and impersonal. I don’t like these homes at all–from the interior finishes, to the furnishings, to the exteriors–the whole package lacks warmth, charm, and style.
