Summer Is… by My Blessed Life

By Kate Riley June 20, 2012

While I’m talking all about paint and stain in Atlanta for the next two days, I have a few special guests coming up, and my first is my friend Myra from My Blessed Life.  I met Myra at the Blissdom conference over a year ago, and we’ve been friends ever since!  Since I’m touring the south this week, I’m excited to begin this “Summer Is…” series with this sweet southern gal, please give Myra a warm welcome!

Hello, hello fabulous Centsational Girl readers!  I’m thrilled and honored to be visiting with you today.  Summer is such a beautiful time of year, although in Alabama it is very hot and humid.  But I embrace the beauty and stay as cool as possible.  Here are a few of my favorite things about Summer in the South…

Porch Living:  My family and I live in the oldest house on main street in our tiny town. We enjoy spending our mornings and evenings on the front porch reading, watching the cars go by, waving to neighbors and sipping on a glass of cold {sweet} iced tea.

Farmer’s Market Produce:  Each weekend, I stop by the farmer’s market to get fresh produce for the coming week.  My favorites are cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini, strawberries, peaches and blackberries.  I’ve made delicious cobblers with fresh strawberries, peaches and blackberries in the last few weeks.

Backyard Hydrangeas: The huge bush of blue hydrangeas growing on the side of our house just takes my breath away. I love cutting blooms and adding them to a vase on the table. They cheer a room up so quickly.

Seabrook Island, South Carolina:  My very favorite destination to visit during the Summer months is Seabrook Island. It is a private, quiet community with beautiful white sandy beaches, gorgeous trees and marshes.  Bike riding is peaceful and a multitude of deer come out to play at dusk.  Seabrook Island isn’t far from Charleston which is definitely another perk!

Thanks so much Kate for having me today! I hope you and your wonderful readers have enjoyed reading about my Summer favorites.  I would love if y’all stopped by for a visit anytime.

Thank you Myra for sharing your definition of summer, I’m putting Seabrook Island on my list of places to visit!

What’s your definition of summer?

  1. I’m actually going to Charleston and Seabrook Island next week for a wedding, and I’m making a mini vacation out of it. Only problem is, I have know idea of what to do – any places you recommend we see, eat or shop? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    • Hi Katie, I’d love to hear suggestions too, I’ll ask Myra!

  2. I love hydrangeas! Summer is all about the smell of sunscreen, BBQs, and chlorine. Its full of friends, laughter and sunburns.

  3. Love these pictures. Myra’s porch vignette is my favorite, followed by the hygrangeas, and who doesn’t love fresh produce!

  4. I love your hydrangeas. Min are a bit spindly and not so luxurious so that I keep them on the bushes rather than cut them up for inside! I wish I knew what to do to make them bloom more!

  5. I too love the farmers markets… It’s winter here on the Sunshine coast in Queesland Australia which means sunny days and cool nights, but still sub-tropical temps. The produce is still great in winter..I recently posted my farmers market great buys.. pastel Gerberas included. I do love those Hydrangeas…just gorgeous!

  6. I am jealous. My hydrangeas are dying.. yours are so pretty as it your porch decor.

glad I stopped by cause I clicked on the antique farmhouse link and up popped exactly what I needed and didnt even realize it till I saw it..

its ordered and maybe by next week this time it’ll be here.. yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

thanks and have a great weekend

  7. Summer is to me….BBQ’s, beaches, fresh cut flowers and just the warmer weather brings a lift to my day {not if it’s too hot though} ;) We are having a couple of really hot days in NY this week, so it isn’t that fun. ;) I love this Summer series. I love hearing what others do in the summer. :)

  8. I grew up in AL, and sitting on the porch with sweet tea was an end of the day must have. Love those memories. But now I live in northern Idaho, and summer nights are chilly! So my summers are: camping with sweatshirts on, swimming and shivering simultaneously, and avoiding the freezer section in the grocery store at all costs:) But seriously, I love living in the northwest! It’s homey and I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere:)

  9. I love your porch! Where did you get that gorgeous green fabric covering your chairs?

  10. Your summer post was lovely. I will have to visit Seabrook Island the next time I am down south.
